Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description/Blazon
An elongated hexagon 2 7/8 inches (7.30 cm) in height and 2 3/8 inches (6.03 cm) in width with a short side up, bearing a blue background within a 1/16 (.16 cm) orle of white with a 3/16 inch (.48 cm) bordure, an arm issuing from base holding a lighted torch, all white.

Symbolism
The design is symbolic of liberty holding the torch of light representing guidance, and is also in the National colors.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally approved for the 442d Infantry Combat Team on 16 December 1943.  It was cancelled on 6 May 1947.  The insignia was reinstated and approved for the 442d Infantry Regiment on 16 January 1956.  (TIOH Dwg. No. A-1-298)
